The toll of wrecks around the Gippsland coast is high, but after examining charts showing the maze of rocks, reefs and small islands dotted out into Bass Strait, it is perhaps surprising that the figure us not greater.
Realising the dangers authorities hurried to erect major lighthouses on various Capes and Islands which ensured a reasonably safe passage for thousands of vessels. Nevertheless many continued to meet their demise along the hostile coast.
The main part of this book lists each wreck chronologically starting from 1797, and continuing through till 1993.
Since its first publication in 1968, 'Wrecks Along the Gippsland Coast' has become the standard reference for all who enjoy stories linked with this treacherous stretch of the Victorian coast.
Now spread over eight editions, and sales in the tens of thousands, this latest edition had been extensively revised and updated to December 1993.
