The author, Don Charlwood, is well known for his publications on shipwrecks off the Victorian coast, and other titles relating to war and maritime history. In this book, he has interwoven accounts by three men involved in the 1866 rescue of over 450 castaways from the wreck of the immigrant ship 'Netherby' on King Island, between Victoria and Tasmania.
But it is a fourth man, Second Officer John Parry, who proved the hero of the rescue. After prolonged hardships he crossed notorious Bass Strait in a whaleboat with an inexperienced crew of three to bring help from Melbourne.
