You may have heard of them, but what really is a 'Visitation'? A Visitation is the recording of a pedigree by a Herald, to prove, or disprove a persons claim to use a title. During the 1500s and 1600s there were such a large number of persons using 'titles' (ie. Sir, Earl, Baron, Knight etc.), but many were not legitimate. To rectify the problem, Heralds were sent to each county and recorded the pedigrees of families of anyone claiming the use of a title. Many of these pedigrees date back to Norman times (the 11th century).
These records form an extremely important source of information for family historians. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Harleian Society published a large series of books containing transcripts of these ancient documents. The books also include descriptions or illustrations of the coats of arms of these people. This CD-ROM is a digital facsimile of just one of these important volumes.
The CD contains digitally enhanced images of the original books, which is fully searchable, bookmarked by major headings which enables easier navigation, and is fully printable.
