Description

Although lacking the sophisticated weapons of today, Victorian soldiers were basically no different from their present-day successors. This book aims to bring these soldiers to life through their uniforms, weapons, equipments and illustrations of them at war and at peace.

The Victorian soldiers experienced profound changes, not just in the use of improved weapons such as the rifled cannon and magazine rifles. The Crimean War was the first campaign in which was correspondents were allowed to accompany the army. As a result the heroism of the soldiers and the inefficiency with which they were supplied were highlighted, and the Crimean War led to the institution of the Victoria Cross for bravery and the formation of the army nursing system.
