Police gazettes provided information and instructions to members of the police force. You can expect the Victoria Police Gazettes to include the following information that will usually list names and sometimes private details, descriptions with photograph, addresses and/or occupations:
- list of all officers at the beginning of the year - name, date of birth, date joined, date promoted to present rank and station
- appointments of registrars of BDM, powder magazine keepers, crown land bailiffs, public vaccinators and health officers, and electoral inspectors
- apprehensions
- auctioneer, hawker, marine store licences
- police appointments, deaths of retired police and recipients of police pensions
- escapees and absconders from custody
- lost or stolen property and victims of crime
- deserting wives, families, etc
- deserting from military service and merchant vessels
- inquests
- missing friends
- persons suspected or wanted for a crime and warrants issued
- prisoners discharged from gaols
- victims of crime
- list of motor car and motor cycle licences - registered number, name and address
- list of motor drivers’ licences
