Police gazettes provided information and instructions to members of the police force. You can expect the Victoria Police Gazettes to include the following information that will usually list names and sometimes private details, descriptions with photograph, addresses and/or occupations:

• appointments of Registrars of BDM, Powder Magazine Keepers, Crown Land
• Bailiffs, Public Vaccinators and Health Officers, and Electoral Inspectors

• deaths of retired police and recipients of police pensions
• escapees and absconders from custody
• funds paid to recipients of police pensions
• lost or stolen property and victims of crime
• deserting wives, families, etc
• deserting from military service
• deserting from merchant vessels
• inquests
• medical practitioners
• missing friends
• persons suspected or wanted for a crime and warrants issued
• police appointments
• prisoners discharged from gaols
• victims of crime

Example entries taken from the 27 July 1911 issue:
Housebreaking and Stealing from Dwelling-Houses

Thomas Edward Bostock, woolbroker, Victoria-parade, Geelong East, reports stolen from his dwelling, between midnight on the 22nd inst. and Five a.m. on the 23rd inst., a grey-green tweed sac suit, maker "E.W. Roach" on buttons of trousers; a grey tweed overcoat,  greenish check stripe, strap across back; a chocolate-coloured scarf; a pair of brown kid gloves; a gold hunting watch, maker Brush and Drummond, "T.E.B." in monogram and crest on side, a plain antelope on the other side; a gold chain, one long and three short links, straight bar ith two gold knobs through each long link ; a silver sovereign case, with "T.E.B." in monogram on outside; a badge of the Victorian Employers' Federation; a half-yearly ticket issued to Mr. T.E. Bostock; about 5s. in silver; a bunch of keys; and 2 letters. Value £45.Entrance was effected by raising a window.-O.4737. 25th July, 1911.

Mary Watkins, confectioner, 85 Canterbury-road, Middle Park, reports stolen from her dwelling, on the 25th inst., a lady's leather purse, containing a sovereign; 2 half-sovereigns; 28s. in silver ; and the half of a lady 's plain gold bangle , set with five pearls, and a ruby in centre, one pearl missing . Value £4.-O.4790. 26th July, 1911.
