Police Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, these Gazettes therefore contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else.

They include court lists, lists of warrants issued, appointments and changes in the Police Service, lists of arrests and discharges (which include descriptions), escaped prisoners, and sometimes missing persons. Notices from Police Gazettes from other states are also often included.

Issued approx. weekly, here collected together on the one CD is the whole years worth of issues (excluding three which are missing) for 1865.

Some example entries are:
Felonies and Offences not Otherwise described - 12 January 1865
William McDonald is charged, on warrant (now at Geelong), with uttering a valueless cheque to Cecil L. Nugent, at Meredith, on the 1st instant. He is aged about 28, 5 feet 11 inches high, light complexion, fair hair, slight beard on the chin, moustache, full eyes, round full face, brownish trousers and vest, and dark wideawake. He writes a good hand, and looks like a wool sorter. He is supposed to have gone to Ballarat.-9th January, 1865

Miscellaneous Information - 7 December 1865
Samuel Green is charged, on warrant, with deserting his children, in the care of Sarah Foster, at Creswick, on the 27th November. He is a shoemaker, aged about 48 or 50, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches, about 10 stone weight, black complexion, black hair worn all round but parted under the chin, no moustache, small scar on one lip, and ship on one arm.
