One of the key reference books for historians, it is basically a dictionary of places in England. Arranged in alphabetical order, and apart from advising where the city, town, parish, chapelry, borough or other place is, it contains such things as: the distance of the town from London, the population according to the 1831 census, a historical summary of the place, descriptions of the local environment, scientific and literary institutions, commerce, trade and manufactures, ecclesiastical and religious establishments, present income and much more.
Apart from covering England itself it also covers the islands of Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man. It is illustrated by map of the counties and islands, and a map of England shows the principal towns, roads, railways and navigable rivers and canals.
Also included are the arms of the cities, bishoprics, universities, colleges and corporate towns and boroughs, together with the seals of the several municipal corporations..

Condition: The four volumes have each been rebound so they have new covers and endpapers. At 171 years old the pages of these books are in excellent condition, with only a few minor age spots, and the odd loose page. Each of the volumes has a bookplate saying the book belonged to Nick Vine Hall.
