Description

This well-researched reference work on the Worthington families of England between the years 1200 and 1600 will make fascinating reading for anyone of Worthington descent.

Containing the results of more than thirty years of research, it has chapters on families living at Worthington, Blainscough, Turton, Shevington, Crawshaw and Latham in Lancashire, and on families in Essex, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Nottinghamshire.

There are biographies of 120 Worthingtons including very full accounts of such notable characters at Dr Thomas Worthington, D.D., who was exiled by Queens Elizabeth and became president of Douai College in France, and Sir William Worthington who fought in the Irish wars and served at the courts of Queens Elizabeth I and King James I.

In his detailed but very readable text the author deals with all aspects of the medieval Worthingtons - the origin of the name itself, the legal, social and economic systems in which they prospered, their estates, homes and records, the relationships between branches, and their armorial bearings. Completed by a sequence of pedigree charts, and an index, the work offers a mine of information to all with genealogical interest in Worthingtons as well as a wealth of valuable new material for other family and local historians working in the medieval period.
