'The River: Sydney Cove to Parramatta' is the first book devoted entirely to a comprehensive history of the Parramatta River.
The contents reflect a journey up the river using clearly defined 'signposts' to point the way to the history of an area. Because of the text and the many visuals used to illustrate the text, the book offers a virtual tour of the river. It is a history beginning before the coming of Europeans in 1788. However, once European settlement had been established, the changes that have taken place to both the environment and the social fabric of the emerging society are examined.
Events and personalities that have made an impact on the society are described and discussed. These are written in a style suitable for the person interested in extending their knowledge of the past in order to understand the present and make a coherent contribution towards their future.
No person interested in Australian history will be able to put this book down. But, because it has an exhaustive index, it can also be dipped into when required.
