Fraser's history of the Earls of Menteith ranks as one of the most
comprehensive and authoritative studies of a title and the families who
held it over almost a thousand years. It begins with the earliest Earls
of Menteith who emerged in the Celtic-Pictish era, and continues
through the late 17th century. It includes material on the Drummonds
and their origin and connections; the Comyns, Russells, Stewarts, and
Grahams. From 1427 to 1694, the Grahams would hold this title, and
would therefore be the last of the great Earls of Menteith. Overall,
this is a substantial genealogical and historical study by one of the
leading historians of the second half of the 19th century.
