Written by A.M. Mackintosh in 1903, this 594 page book is a comprehensive
history on the history of the Mackintoshes and Clan Chattan. Among Mackintosh
histories, this one-volume study ranks high for both its thoroughness and its
authenticity. It includes both genealogical and historical material, but it
primarily is an extended account of the Mackintoshes and of Clan Chattan from
the high middle ages through the 19th century.
There are chapters of course, on the old Clan Chattan, its origina and name,
on the 6th chief of Bannockburn, the clan battle at Perth in 1396, the battle of
Harlaw and the clan conflict in the 15th century, the 16th chief and his battle
with Huntly and his relations with Queen Mary, conflict with the Gordons, the
Camerons and the MacDonald of Keppoch. There is also information on clan
activity in the 17th century, relations with the Farquarsons, the role of the
family before and after 1688 and its Jacobite involvements, Lady Anne and the
Rout of Moy, the Mackintoshes at Culloden, and the often-cited curse of Moy
which left so many chiefs heirless.
There is a concluding section on the principal branches of Clan Mackintosh
and on the tribes and families of Clan Chattan.
