This is a new edition of Dr Grant's monumental study of this family
from the northwest of Scotland which first appeared in 1959 and was then updated
by John MacLeod of MacLeod in 1981. Further additions were made for this CD-ROM
version, which is issued with the permission of John MacLeod of MacLeod for the
Associated Clan MacLeod Societies.
It begins with the origins of Leod, first chief, and his successors to 1350.
The story continues with a history of the family and its relationship with the
Lords of the Isles, 1350-1493; the survival of the family under the emerging
power of the Stewart monarchy; the religious conflicts of the 17th and 18th
centuries; the effects on the family of the Jacobite rebellions of 1688-1746;
and accommodation to the changing economic and social conditions of the 19th and
20th centuries. The work concludes with an account of Dunvegan Castle, the
heraldry of the MacLeods, and the MacLeod tartans.
