Originally published 1932, then reprinted 1984. This book now on CD contains 122 pages and a map. The Bells were a major family in the Dumfriesshire region of Scotland, and for many centuries, they played an important role in Border matters. This is a history of that family extending over the centuries and emphasizing its role in local and national affairs.
James Steuart's work is an extremely thorough study of the family, working branch by branch, parish by parish, through as many family groups as he could identify in a lifetime of research. In all, he discusses over 29 different branches of the family, all in the county of Dumfries.
There is as well an Index of Persons, which not only provides references to the work but also creates a family tree of sorts, showing the relationship of the referenced names. There is also an Index of Places.
