A unique source of information, this is a valuable resource that should not be overlooked. For anyone with either connections to the Tasmania, or just an interest in its history this is a vast collection.

Originally titled the Hobart Government Gazette, even though it covered all Tasmania, it changed in 1906 to officially be named the Tasmanian Government Gazette. Generally issued weekely, they contant a whole range of fascinating information relating to the placeds and people of the state.

Go
vernment Gazettes in general contain a vast amount of historical and genealogical information. However they are largely an untapped resource. The few complete runs that are available are usually only found in major libraries. And even for researchers who do have access to these the sheer size and extent of the Gazettes is daunting.

Tens of thousands of ordinary people and localities, small and large, are mentioned EVERY YEAR in Government Gazettes But they offer researchers much more than simply names and places. They will help you reconstruct events and circumstances in the life of individuals and communities.

Government Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. They are published by governments and their agencies as a means of communication to officials and to the general public. Gazettes therefore contain a range of valuable and interesting content such as the following list of information:

  • Acts of Parliament
  • government appointments, resignations and transfers, including: Justices of the Peace and returning officers
  • government departments
  • insolvents
  • land acquisitions, rentals, sales and leases
  • mining and minerals
  • petitions
  • and so much more ...
