Police gazettes provided information and instructions to members of the police force. Example entry taken from 4 April, 1902:

£200 REWARD.
WHEREAS, on the 10th February, 1902, at the Lawrenny
Estate, situate near Hamilton, several Grass Paddocks and
Bush Land, the property of the Executors of the late H. J. 
Brook 's Estate were maliciously set on fire by means of
phosphorus, by some person or persons unknown , I am
authorised by the Government to offer a Reward of £50,
and by the Executors H. J. Brock's Estate to offer a 
Reward of £ 150, for such information as shall lead to the
conviction of the offender or offenders.
