Surrey's roots lie in its villages. Despite the changes brought about by the age of the motor the villages still retain their character and charm and are a source of pride and delight to both local people and visitors.
During the 19th century William Cobbett wrote in admiration of what he saw as he passed through the county on his 'Rural Rides'. More than 150 years later Graham Collyer decided to record the history, atmosphere, anecdotes and events of the county's villages for his generation. Now, as one century gives way to another that record, 'The Surrey Village Book', has been revised and updated by the author for this new expanded edition.
It now has descriptions for over 140 Surrey villages recalling the history, people, and events that have given each it particular flavour. Arranged alphabetically.
