The author grew up in the deprived suburbs of Sydney, where the streets were the playground for many and also an environment where kids found trouble. Young George soon found that trouble, and was before the courts several times for minor crimes and misdemeanours.

He spent time in homes for wayward boys where strong and descent male role-models put him back on the correct path.

By the time he was in his twenties, he had met a girl he was very fond of, marriage was in the air, and he had set himself on a life without trouble - or so he thought.

At a party one night, a well known thug, in a fit of drunken rage, shot his brother and threatened George with the same fate. However, the murdered escaped imprisonment and George and his new wife moved away to a less troubled suburb where they started their new life.

The irony was, that just A few years later, as a proud Digger in the AIF, Tarlington was shot in the back by a Japanese thug at Kokoda. For more than 50 years he carried that bullet in his lungs. Today he lives in Sydney never destined 'to die by a bullet'.
