This is a reprint of 'The Story of Galloway'. It first appeared in a weekly serial for, in 'The Galloway News' during the years of 1962-63 and was immediately published in book form in the autumn of 1963. A second edition appeared the following year, and a third in 1971.
This present edition is an exact reprint of the text of the original except for the last chapter which has been rewritten to give a more general account of the changes which have occurred in the present century and bring the century up to date.
'The Story of Galloway' is an attempt to give an account in narrative form of life in Galloway in different stages of its development. With this end in view, therefore, only those aspects of its political, economic and religious history which seriously affected the actual lives and customs of the inhabitants have been dealt with.
The author states that this work is essentially a 'story' and not a 'history', but still includes reference to its history throughout.
