St John's Wood is architecturally unique in London. Much of it was laid out in paired villas that today, have matured in their leafy streets into one of the most charming areas in the metropolis. Maida Vale, to its west, was developed later, largely as mansion flats. The author explores and explains the development of the area but concentrates on residents, who included some of the most famous people of their time.
