Government Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource
for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields
throughout Australia. They were published by the government as a means of
communication to officials and the general public and therefore contain
information that is of great use in establishing an image of the colony of South
Australia and its people in the past.
Issued weekly with occasional special issues, the South Australian Government
Gazettes contain information such as proclamations, land transactions, court
notices, notice of acts, public notices, tenders contracts, appointments and
resignations, bankrupt and insolvency notices, impoundments, police auctions,
unclaimed letters, storekeepers and publicans licences, rewards on offer,
inquest verdicts, persons found dead in public places in the colony and more ...
Issued weekly, the Government Gazettes contain many thousands of names and
places mentioned every year, and contain information from a whole cross section
of the community. This product provides a great tool for researching the
history of South Australia, making information that is difficult to find, easily
accessible on one CD.

Returns of Persons who have died (or been found dead) in Public Places

Name of Person: William Clemowe
Date of Death or When Reported: December 1st
Description of Body: Between 60 and 70 years of age, stout build, 5ft. 6in.
high, dark complexion, hair grey
Circumstanced attending the decease, of finding of the body: The deceased was
found dead in the cell at the Police Station, Gawler at half-past six o'clock
a.m. on December 1st. Was arrested at half-past seven p.m. for stealing a
watch. H[e] appeared quite well in health when taken into custody, and did not
complain.
All information received by the police: Inquest held before R.J. Turner, S.M.
Verdict: - Died from natural causes. I have been informed deceased has friends
in Helston, Cornwall, in England. The deceased was a native of Truro, and a
saddler by trade.
