Solihull's growth was slow, at first, and as recently as 1894 the village was created a Rural District Council. Steady development followed, however, and Solihull progressed through stages of local government until it became a Metropolitan Borough in the reorganisation of 1974. Since the mid-1960s there has been much expansion and redevelopment in the town centre, involving the destruction, unfortunately, of many of the older buildings. Thankfully many fine photographs survive from the Victorian and Edwardian periods and the author has made skilful use of them.
