This classic work, first published in 1987 and compiled by well known maritime historian, Ronald Parsons, has been through numerous editions and printings, the latest being a reprint of the third revised edition.

It records details of nearly 600 vessels from 1853 when William Randell placed the first steamer on the Murray through to the present.

Introductory chapters deal with topics such as the era before steam navigation, the advent of steamers on the rivers, some shipowners, and 'in the wake' which covers border tariffs, unusual craft, the Lakes, Milk boats, and tourism.

The main listing, which is arranged alphabetically by name of vessel, gives the following details (where known and applicable) for every paddle steamer, screw steamer, barge and sailing ship known to have operated on the Murray-Darling system:

  • Name of vessel
  • Official Number
  • Hull material & Propulsion
  • Tonnage & Registered dimensions
  • Date and place built and builder
  • Description of engines
  • Owners and dates
  • Port of registration
  • Fate of vessel
  • Other notes & information.

Includes nearly 300 photos and other illustrations. Other features include fleet lists for the major operators, map, explanation of terms, indexes of names and vessels appearing in the text and main list and other useful reference information.
