This publication contains details of all the ships enrolled with Customs at the port of Newcastle, New South Wales, from the commencement of registration at the port until 1899. It lists both sail and steam ships.
In the fleet list section the various columns indicate from left to right: name, material used in the hull, rig, gross tonnage, year built, year acquired and year sold or lost.
It should be clearly understood that the information listed is as entered upon the register and therefore may differ from that appearing elsewhere, such as in newspaper reports. The registrar had no means of checking on the accuracy of information supplied by owners and in many cases dates shown for transactions are, in fact, the date when advice was received and are far from accurate.
