This book is concerned with shipping casualties involving wrecks (total loss) or serious damage to ships owned in Australia or New Zealand, no matter where they occurred, together with accidents happening to vessels travelling to or from those counties and extensively deals with the period from early colonial days to the 1970s, but includes many incidents up to the time of publication (2003).
The greater part of the information has been collected from contemporary newspapers, records of the Registrar of British Ships for Australian and New Zealand ports, or other official or semi-official sources.
Listed alphabetically by ship name, it compiles approximately 6000 shipping casualties. There is also an alphabetical list of persons names in the casualty reports but the names of shipowners are not listed. The source from where the information was taken is shown for each entry.
