In 1963 it was stated by the administration of the New South Wales Government Railways that 1967 would be the last year of steam operation anywhere on the system. Using an envisaged total of 400 diesel-electric locomotives plus other electric, diesel-hydraulic and railcar/rail motor stock, steam power would be eliminated completely.
Near the end of Spring 1966 news came of a bumper harvest, and this was good news to the steam locomotives - as they were required in the hauling of good. Those that were already sidelined were reinstated - albeit a short reprieve longer for some others - the end was near for these magnificent steam locomotives.
This is their story in words and pictures ... the 'Seasons of Steam'.
