Before 1855, when the registration of births, marrriages and deaths became compulsory in Scotland, genealogical records were scanty. This book attempts to collect the old gravestone records before they perish and clearance, but are in any case inaccessible to many researchers, particularly those not residing in the area.
This volume is an attempt to collect the pre-1855 genealogical content of those gravestone inscriptions to be found in Wester Ross before any more is lost.
The area covered (which the publishers have taken as Western Ross as defined in the 19th century Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland) lay in the county of Ross and Cromarty until local government reform in 1975. After that, the major part lay in Ross and Cromarty District with smaller parts in the Districts of Sutherland and of Syke and Lochalsh.
Burial grounds covered are: in Kincardine, Kincardine, Croick; in Lochbroom, Badenscallie, Ullapool (Old), Lochbroom, Dundonnell; in Gairloch, Laide, Poolewe (Old), Gairloch (Old), Kinlochewe (Old); in Applecross, Annat, Applecross; in Lochcarron, Kishorn, Lochcarron (Old); in Lochalsh, Plockton, Kirkton of Lochalsh; in Kintail, Killilan, Kiel Duich; Glenshiel (see Kiel Duich).
