Before 1855, when the registration of births, marriages and deaths became compulsory in Scotland, genealogical records were scanty. This book attempts to collect the old gravestone records before they perish or are lost underground.
Covering the Western Parishes in East Lothian, this index summaries genealogical information on the gravestones for all years (not just up to 1855 as other volumes in this series do).
Each cemetery has a map, which gives each gravesite a number and shows the location of it within the burial ground. Nearly the whole of each monumental inscription is transcribed, and written here in as an abbreviated form (in number order).
Burial Grounds covered are: Tranent, Seton, Prestonpans, Prestonpans West and Ormiston Old.
