Before 1855, when the registration of births, marriages and deaths became compulsory in Scotland, genealogical records were scanty. This book attempts to collect the old gravestone records before they perish or are lost underground.
Covering the Hillfoot Villages in East Lothian, this index summaries genealogical information on the gravestones which record any death before 1855 and includes some adjacent stones which are presumably of the same family, and also some deaths at sea and abroad after 1855.
Each cemetery has a map, which gives each gravesite a number and shows the location of it within the burial ground. Nearly the whole of each monumental inscription is transcribed, and written here in as an abbreviated form (in number order).
Burial Grounds covered are: Bara, Dunglass, Garvald, Innerwick, Morham, Oldhamstocks, Old Kirkyard, Spott, Stenton, Whittinghame, Yester (Gifford).
