From 1855 compulsory registration has been in force in Scotland, and records are maintained by the Registrar General of all births, marriage and deaths in the county. Post-1855 inscriptions have been recorded here if they mention a surname appearing also on an adjacent pre-1855 stone, and for some of the smaller burial grounds, all inscriptions have been recorded.
This book is intended to be of help to those interested in Scottish genealogical research. It is the last volume of a series of pre-1855 gravestone inscriptions in all accessible sites in the parishes of the old Stewarty of Kirkcudbright.
The monumental inscriptions of the Stewarty are less damaged than in many parts of Scotland. The stone (from a local quarry) was of excellent quality, and there seems to have been less deliberate destruction.
Burial ground covered are: Buittle (correction), Colvend (addenda), Dundrennan Abbey (addenda), Lochrutton, Parton, Rerrick, Tongland, Twynholm, Kirkchrist (Stell), Urr.
