This volume in the Scottish Monumental Inscription series contains not only all the gravestone inscriptions in the East Preston Street Cemetery, Edinburgh, but also information on where to find the burial records too. The burial ground at East Street Preston was opened in 1820, and closed to further burials towards the end of the century.
It was originally known as "Newington Cemetery", and must not be confused with the other cemeter of that name (originally knoiwn as "Echo Bank") which lies about half a mile to the east.
The first burials took place in 1820 and the gravestones included many inscriptions for deaths before 1855 when statutory regulation began in Scotland. Thes inscriptions may supplement the deaths recorded in the St Cuthbert's Old Parish Register or may be the only record of the death concerned.
This list is not confined to pre-1855 inscritoptions, but includes all legible inscriptions found in 1989.
The compiler has recorded each inscription in full, however religious verses (unless they mentioned other relatives), have been omitted. Divided into sections throughout, each section has a map drawn, with the grave sites numbered
on each.
