This volume in the Scottish Monumental Inscription series contains all
gravestone inscriptions in Comely Bank Cemetery, Edinburgh. The cemetery was
opened by the Edinburgh Cemetery Company in 1898 and lies near the Royal
Victoria Hospital.
The present cemetery entrance is about fifty yards along Crewe Road South.
The original entrance was a few yards along Craigleith Road and still exists as
the entrance to complex of modern flats built in recent years on ground
reclaimed from the cemetery. Any gravestones on that section have apparently not
survived. Another section in the middle of the north centre has also been walled
off for other building purposes and no gravestones from there exists either.
The compiler has recorded each inscription in full, however religious verses
(unless they mentioned other relatives), have been omitted. Divided into
sections throughout, each section has a map drawn, with the grave sites numbered
on each.
Example entries:
961. In loving memory of Richard Allan McDougall, S.S.C., born at Jedburgh 12
March 1870, died October 1946 and of his wife Alice Maud May COGSWELL who died
18 March 1953.
973. In loving memory of Gladys Isabella FISKIN died 1 October 1998 aged 74
years.
