Before 1855, when the registration of births, marrriages and deaths became compulsory in Scotland, genealogical records were scanty. This book attempts to collect the old gravestone records before they perish or are lost underground.
It covers Carrick which has been an administrative area since at latest 1305, then part of Ayrshire and now the south part of the Kyle and Carrick District of Strathclyde region, and also Alloway, as addendum.
This index summaries genealogical information on the gravestones which record any death before 1855 and includes some adjacent stones which are presumably of the same family, and also some deaths at sea and abroad after 1855.
Nearly the whole of each monumental inscription is transcribed, and written here in as an abbreviated form.
