Compiled by David Cargill, Barbara Fairweather and Angus Mitchell, then edited by Stuart Fleming, this book, published by the Scottish Genealogy Society, is another title along the lines of their Scottish Monumental Inscriptions Pre-1855 Series, however this one goes beyond 1855.
Volume 1 in this series covering Argyllshire, this volume covers Lismore and Appin. The united parish of Lismore and Appin in the Lorn district of Argyll extends mainly along the east side of Loch Linnhe. It also includes Kingairloch on the west side of the loch and Eilean Munda on Loch Leven. The island of Lismore was once the seat of the Bishop of the Isles. Its parish church and churchyard are in the ruins of the old cathedral.
The district of Appin consists of Airds, Strath of Appin, Glencreran, Duror and Glencoe. The lack of death registers for the parish as the minister explained in 1781 was because there were seven of eight places of interment and some at great distances.
This volume records the inscriptions in eight burial grounds. Two of these are episcopalian, St John's at West Laroch now Ballachulish and the Holy Cross Churchyard at Portnacroish. The Churchyards at Keil, Duror, Kinlochlaigh and Eilean Munda are established Church of Scotland burial grounds.
