This classic work puts this complicated subject of heraldry into understandable terms, looking not only at coats of arms but also at the meaning of the constituent symbols which are used to compose those coats of arms. There are chapters as well on badges, crests, helmets, crowns and coronets, and supporters; and of particular interest to many is a chapter on flags, banners, and standards. The national arms of Great Britain are explained, along with the meaning and origin of titles, mottoes, and seals. The mottoes for well over a hundred families are included, as well as information on how to draw a shield, a bibliography of Scottish books on heraldry, the more important repositories of Scottish genealogical and heraldic records, and finally, an excellent glossary of heraldic terms, which will allow the reader to quickly understand the devices used on the various coats of arms.
