It's now over seventy years since the second edition of John Smith's 'Old Scottish Clockmakers 1453-1850', was published, and apart from a reprint in 1975 (without additions or correction), the only new work with a national theme is the later Felix Hudson's 'Scottish Clockmakers: A Brief History up to 1900'. This current work began as a modest review-cum-supplement to the 1975 reprint of John Smith's 'Old Scottish Clockmakers', which appeared in 'The Scottish Genealogist' in 1977.
It contains a listing of over 5500 craftsmen, this work provides reference to a greater number of craftsmen than has ever been available before. Although only their names, place of business (usually county), nature of work (ie. clock or watchmaker or both), and known working years are shown - this is still very important information.
The usefulness of this guide to collectors, antique dealers, auctioneers, clock restorers, horological writers, genealogists and family historians is evident.
