Researchers of County Roscommon, in Ireland have an "immense" source of information available right at their fingertips.
John Hunter, who has been researching family in this county for many years, released Resource Roscommon Disk 1 in 2004. This was then followed in 2006 by Disk 2 which contained additional information. Information from both CDs, together with more new data, has been compiled on to this new 2007 edition on Resource County Roscommon, which comes as single CD-ROM. Now the compiler brings you a massive update with this third edition.
The user will find invaluable information on Townlands, Griffith's Valuation, surname distribution, voters, freeholders, Tithe Applotment payers, maps, boundaries, schools, churches, courthouses, workhouses, hospitals, graveyards to name some. New information on the CD includes the 1796 list of Flax-growers, school projects, wills, deeds, convict records and more.
The compiler includes details on how to track down information relating to County Roscommon, as well as about 2,000 pages of data including 120 maps, and many databases compiling historical records. Mr Hunter said the CD was designed to help others find information more easily without the frustration he experienced trying to find records of his ancestors when he was researching his family history.
Mr Hunter’s previous CDs on County Roscommon and a similar CD for County Leitrim have been well-received by local and family history buffs around the world, and the new CD looks set to follow suit.
For example, the editor of the All Ireland Sources Newsletter, the newsletter of the Society of Australian Genealogists, Mr Terry Eakin described the second edition of Resource County Roscommon as "the best ever collection of single county information and resources available".
In another review, Mr Albert Siggins secretary of the Roscommon Historical and Archaeological Society said "John Hunter has done the family historian and genealogical heritage in Co. Roscommon a great favour with the production of his updated CD on genealogy sources for the county".
