Compiled to be distributed amongst the police force only, and therefore these
Gazette contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else.
Apart from any changes within the police force which are all listed
(promotions, demotions, retirements, deaths etc), information is also given on
housebreak-ins, robberies, arson, murders, lost horses and cattle, deserters,
escaped prisoners, reports on those released, even deaths reported to the police
(together with their place of death and cause of death given), and stolen
bicycles and cars. Notices from interstate police gazettes are sometimes
included. You will also find details of missing stock, and property, missing
persons, even found items as well.
Now searchable, these Gazettes on CD-ROM open up a world of interesting and
comprehensive information about individual people and their lives in
Queensland's past.

Example entry taken from the 5 February 1921 issue:
Description of Portrait [no. 1109 - portrait of a man shown]
No. 1109.-Rockhampton - Eugen Pruess, wanted for service of a summons, charged
with deserting his illegitimate child, at Rockhampton, on the 17th August,
1920. Description:- About 21 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, medium
build, fair complexion and hair, blue eyes, ordinary nose, minus little finger
right hand; a native of Germany; speaks with a German accent; a miner; usually
wears a full brown suit, ox-blood coloured boots, white shirt with turned-down
coller, and a dark tie. Was last heard of when leaving Mount Mulligan, during
the month of December, 1920; then stated his intention of going South,
probably to Newcastle, to work in the mines there.-660. 1st February, 1921.

Deserters from His Majesty's Service
Deserted from H/M/A/S. "Brisbane" at Sydney, on 15th March, 1922, Frederick
John Simpson, stoker, 21 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion,
light brown hair, hazel eyes, old appendix scar; a native of London.-1336. 4th
April, 1922.
Property Lost or Stolen
C.I. Branch - Brisbane - Lost of stolen about the City, during the past
four months, the property of Mrs. Sarah I. Daniel, Regatta Hotel, Toowong, one
five-stone diamond and sapphire ring (2 diamonds and 3 sapphires), claw
setting, rather unusual design, small portion of the ring flat at each end of
setting; value £45. Identifiable.-1390. 8th April, 1922.

Miscellaneous

Commissioners' Office.-Warrants (three) have been issued for the arrest of
LEONARD ROBERTSON. 1st: For disobeying an order of the court for the support
of his wife and two children (amount due, £11 7s.). 2nd: Warrant of commitment
for non-payment of £6 17s. 6d. 3rd: Cost upon an order, £2 3s. 6d.
Description:-35 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, medium build, dark hair
and complexion, large brown eyes (cast in left), false teeth; generally wears
a dark-grey or brown sac suit. Is said to be employed at Brisbane as a wharf
labourer. If located, it is requested that an endeavour be made to induce him
to pay the amount of £20 8s. owing.-752. 26th February, 1923.

Cairns.-The summons for service on PATRICK JOSEPH KEARNEY, charged with child
desertion, has been withdrawn, at the instance of the complainant, Elizabeth
Bridget Kearney.-701. 23rd February, 1923.

Warrants Issued
Commissioner's Office - Warrants have been issued by the Dunedin (New Zealand)
Bench for the arrest of Frank Gorton (name probably ficticious), on the
following charges: (1) On 17th June, 1925, at Dunedin, did obtain from one
John George Wregglesworth the sum of £150 by falsely pretending that he was
conduction a business for the manufacture of woollen dusters and desired a
partner, (2) on or about the 17th June, 1925 at Dunedin, did commit theft of
£150, the property of John George Wregglesworth. Description: 37 years of age,
about 15 stone weight, fresh complexion, fair curly hair (brushed back) clean
shaven, square features; dresses in a grey suit, grey tweed overcoat, light-coloured
soft felt hat, tan shoes with pointed toes; may be identical with Henry J.
Cutting, whose photograph appears in "Victoria Police Gazette" 1921, page 31,
he may be accompanied by a women, believed to be his wife, aged 28 years o
age, 5 feet 6 inches high, thin build, sallow complexion, dark hair, fawn-coloured
dress, fawn tweed coat. Arrest desired.
Wife and Child Deserters
Roma Street, Brisbane - The above in a photograph (taken sixteen years ago,
now fuller in face) of Lachlan John Macpherson, against whom a summons has
been issued for disobeying an order of the court for the maintenance of his
wife, Sarah Helen Macpherson (amount due £18). Description: 47 years of age, 5
feet 9 3/4 inches high, proportionate build, sallow complexion, dark hazel
eyes, scar on third finger right hand, eyebrows meet.
A truly fascinating read, and useful for all who had family in Queensland
during this time ... you just never know what you might find.
