If you had family living in Queensland in the 1890s, have you thought of looking
at the Police Gazettes for information? These are a historian's goldmine of
information. Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, these
Gazettes contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else.
Far from just listing those who were in the Police Force, or those that were on
the 'wrong side' of the law - you will also find entries of missing persons, or
they might be a witness to crime, or they may have had something stolen from
them, or they may even have found an item, and reported it to the Police.
Generally produced once a week, you will find information on the housebreak-ins,
robberies, arson, murders, lost horses and cattle, deserters, escaped prisoners
and reports on those released ... as well as some information from interstate
police gazettes ... and so much more.
This CD-ROM contains all 52 issues as well as a few additional Supplements
that were released for the year. Each issue is usually eight pages in length,
and is full of fascinating information.
An example entry taken from the 12 May 1894 issue:
Housebreaking and Stealing from the Dwelling House
BRISBANE - On the night of the 30th ultimo the railway station at Beerburrum,
eight miles from Caboolture, was broken into and a cashbag containing £60 or
£70, together with £2 3s. 3d. (station cash), stolen therefrom. Suspicion
attaches to a man named D. Smith, a dismissed railway employe who was in the
temporary charge of the station during the absence of his wife. - O.775.
7th May, 1894.
