The Government Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. They were published by the government as a means of communication to officials and the general public and therefore contain information that is of great use in establishing an image of Australia and its people in the past.

The 1901 Queensland Government Gazette contains:

  • Appointments, promotions and resignations for
    - Civil and Public Service
    - Queensland Defence Force
    - Trustees of cemeteries, racecourses, &c
    - Members of Boards and Committees
  • Appointments of magistrates and Justices of the Peace
  • Brands
  • Government Acts and Proclamations
  • Intestacy returns and notices
  • Insolvency notices
  • Land records including Crown Land leases
  • Licences
  • Lists of unclaimed letters
  • Notices or rewards for lost or stolen property and stock
  • Patents and inventions
  • Probate notices
  • Petitions
  • Professional lists including medical practitioners, chemists, ministers of religion
  • Transmissions of real estate by death
  • Trademark registrations
  • Other – including road closures, unclaimed property and tender notices

One interesting feature of the gazettes in 1901 is the many entries relating to the Queensland Defence Force (Land). There are lists of permanent staff, examination results, casualties in South Africa, office bearers of Rifle Clubs, appointments, transfers, escorts, guards of honour and other general information. Surprisingly, there are also many bugle calls which have been approved for different regiments, battalions and companies. [see the Gazette of 11 May 1901 for an example]

The Annnal Prize Meeting of the Western Districts Rifle Association will be held at Toowoomba on Monday and Tuesday, 11th and 12th November, 1901. Field's Challenge Cup, for State School Cadets, will be competed for on Saturday, the 9th November, 1901 (Birthday of His Majesty The King). Full programme and entry forms can be obtained from Captain Sankey, Secretary Queensland Rifle Association, Brisbane, and from Lieutenant F. W. G. Annand, Secretary Western Districts Rifle Association, Toowoomba.

This CD contains high quality scanned images of all of the original issues, and has been bookmarked for easy navigation. Pages can be searched, browsed, enlarged and printed out if required.
