An amazing source of historical informaiton, Government Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia.
They were published by the Government as a means of communication to
officials and to the general public, and therefore include certain
information that is of great use in establishing an image of Australia
and its people in the past.
The Government Gazettes for a particular locality eventually became
standardised with the types of material and information included. The
information contained in the years 1859-1870 include:
- Appointees
to Government positions
- Appointments of Magistrates and Justices of the Peace
- Appointments
of Returning Officers
- Crown Land Leases
- Deceased
Estates
- Government Acts and Proclamations
- Impoundments
- Legal
Notices
- Licences and Contracts
- Lists of Officers,
Medical Practitioners, Ministers of Religion etc.
- Partnerships
- Unclaimed
Property
- Unclaimed Letters
- Witnesses to Executions
