Now available for you to own your own copy of the Queensland Electoral Rolls covering the years 1870-1879. Published by the Toowoomba & Darling Downs Family History Society, it is printable, searchable and is suitable for any PC computer with Windows 95 (or later).
Over 200,000 entries have been transcribed from the original microfilmed copies - some of which were in very poor condition. The CD is self-starting, and the text is available in two formats. The first is in a table format (with columns), and the other is a straight text listing, with a new line for each person. The same information is in each, but you're given the option of how you wish to view records.
The publishers have a note stating that "voting was not compulsory, and only males over the age of 21 years were eligible if they "satisfied certain…qualifications” or (until 1867 in gold field electoral districts) "held a miner’s right or licence for six months." However, "Persons in naval or military service or in the police force, as well as Clerks of Petty Sessions and paid police magistrates were ineligible to vote." (quoted from Queensland State Archives Brief Guide to the use of State Electoral Rolls)"
Please note also that the original rolls sometimes contain errors in the spelling of names, and these have been transcribed as written. Fiche numbers have been included to enable researchers to check the original records on microfiche.
Information contained in the electoral rolls includes: Surname, Given Names, Electoral District, Years, Qualification, Residence, and Fiche Number.
