| This is an english translation of "Chapter XX. Name List" of William Iwan's "Old Lutheran Emigration of the Mid-19th Century. Note this is not the entire original book, but just the Name List translated and reproduced. The chapter starts off with the following: "We are fortunate to be able to provide the names of most of the emigrants. For this we especially must give credit to the Old Lutherans' strict observance of the procedures that were required in connection with their emigration. In spite of this, we cannot furish a list free from omissions. In any case, the total number of the emigrants has been quite accurately determined. The difference betwen this total and the number of names here included will show how few omissions there actually are." This book covers 'Old Lutheran' emigrants from Eastern Germany (mainly Pomerania and lower Silesia) that emigrated to Australia, Canada and the United States in the period of 1835 to 1854. Set out in year order, and then grouped together by places they emigrated to and from - information given is invaluable to all genealogists with German ancestors. An example entry: 1838 to Australia from Brandenburg, Kries Zullichau Salkau: Hartmann, Joh. Georg (46) "Gärtner", with wife Joh. Luise Preschel (34) and two children: Joh. Karoline (10), Joh. Gottlob (6). Tables of the number of emigrants to various countries year by year are included, as well as fold-out maps, and a complete name index. Definately a must for all German genealogy researchers. Contents: Foreword List of Emigrant Surnames 1835-1854 maps Index |
