| This book, first published in 1981 as the title 'Family History for Beginners', has now been updated, expanded and released in its thirteenth edition. The concept arose out of notes to accompany lectures at Beginners Courses run by the Heraldry and Genealogy Society of Canberra. The Council of the Society considers that what has evolved warrants a place among the more comprehensive manuals for Australians, one which goes 'beyond' the needs of beginners. Designed to accompany you from the beginning - from your desire to trace your family lines, through to the necessary stages to complete a 'tree'. It will not solve all your problems, no one book could do that, but it will set you off in the right direction, offering hope and techniques to help you on your journey. Chapter 1 is aptly entitled 'Where Do I Begin?' The following three chapters are devoted to record keeping, genealogy software, libraries and availability of resources. In Chapters 5-13 the emphasis is on searching Australian records but the methods employed are often applicable in other countries. Extensive references and internet addresses are provided so that as experience grows, there is the opportunity to expand your knowledge further. Chapters 14-18 deal with overseas research and Chapter 19 is devoted to an overall view of methodology and approach to genealogical research. At the end of the book are appendices with useful addresses and maps and a comprehensive glossary. Contents: Foreword Preface 1. Where Do I Begin? 2. Getting Organised 3.
