Description

Transcripts from the Parish Registers of twenty-four of the parishes which belong to the Peculiar of Southwell, Nottinghamshire. These transcripts were written on strips of parchment tied in one bundle and kept in the muniment room at Southwell. They are obviously the remaining members of a much larger series of documents, and cover Baptisms, Marriages and Burials from 1614 to 1641.

Some of these transcripts are of an earlier time than the extant Parish Registers of the particular parish. This publication is edited by T.M. Blagg, and was originally published in 1903.

The Introduction provides more information on just what title is about:

" ... the church-warden wshall once every year within one month of the 25 day of March, transmit unto the Bishop of the Diocese or his Chancellor, a true copy of the name of all persons Christened, Married or Buried in their paries in the year before ..."

The peculiar of Southwell in Nottinghamshire was ordinarily exempt from episcopal jurisdiction in such matters, and the 24 parishes in the peculiar made similar returns to the Southwell registry. A few of these survive from this period, and they were transcribed by T.N. Blagg and printed as the first volume of the Record Series of the Thoroton Society in 1903.

The returns are for:

  • Beckingham 1634, 1637, 1641
