The concept of researching a single surname in depth seems to have emerged in the late 19th century with a few pioneering studies in Britain and the United States, but it was not until the late 1930s that American One-Name Groups or Associations began holding gatherings and publishing newsletters and journals on a regular basis. By the late 1960s there was evidence of similar activity within the United Kingdom and this has continued ever since.

This booklet was written as a guide for those family historians who are either involved with extant one-name groups or are contemplating the formation of this type of group in the future.
