Nottinghamshire is a county of contrasts. In the south is lush green pastureland and acres of mixed farming which encompass the historic city of Nottingham with its many industries. To the west and north farmland mingles with the beautiful if diminished Sherwood Forest and the great coalfields that wave inspiration to D.H. Lawrence.
But it is in its villages that the true flavour of a county is still to be found. "The Nottinghamshire Village Book" describes over 140 of them, recalling the history, people and events which give each its own individual character.
Written by local village Women's Institutes and compiled by the Nottinghamshire Federation of Women's Institutes, the book has a plentiful supply of stories, anecdotes and atmosphere. It introduces the reader to a flourishing rural world and will be a welcome companion to all with an interest in the county.
