Description

Northampton had been an important borough before the Norman Conquest, as Domesday Book reveals. It is also a new town, its transformation from a medium-sized old market town in the early 19th century into a significant manufacturing centre, dominating the shoe and leather industries, was followed by a period of planned expansion from 1965 to 1985.

The book begins with a portrait of the town as it was in 1835, the year when the Municipal Corporations Act was passed and modern local government began.
