Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local,
family and social historians as well as researchers in other fields. They were
published by the government as a means of communication to officials and the
general public and therefore contain information that is of great use in
establishing an image of New Zealand and its people in the past.
Divided into two volumes, you will find details on government notices,
business proceedings, bankruptcies, land transfer notices, departmental and
parliamentary notices, appointments and resignations of positions and more. Example entry taken from February 22, 1883 Name removed from List of Officiating Ministers.
Registrar-General's Office,
Wellington, 16th February, 1883. IT is here by notified that the name of The Reverend FREDERICK GEORGE BRITTAN.
has been removed from the list of Officiating Ministers, under " The Marriage Act, 1880," belonging to the Church of the
Province of New Zealand, commonly called the Church of
England, at the request of the Most Reverend the Primate.
