So you've heard of Government Gazettes ... but do you know what they really are? and how can they help you with your research? Government Gazettes, which were generally issued weekly, contain an enormous about of fascinating information, both historical and genealogical.
The Government Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. They were published by the government as a means of communication to officials and the general public and therefore contain information that is of great use in establishing an image of Australia and its people in the past.
The New South Wales Government Gazette of 1867 contains:
- appointees to government positions
- appointments to Public School Boards
- court cases
- Deeds of Grants ready for delivery
- dissolution of business partnerships
- errors in deeds
- estates of deceased persons
- forfeited conditional purchases of land, pre-emptive leases
- horse and cattle brands
- insolvent estates
- land for sale
- licenses for auctioneers, timber, and publicans, and notices for other licensing meetings; also a license to inter in the Sydney Burial Grounds
- licensed surveyors
- magistrates appointed
- medical practitioners
- ministers of religion
- notices relating to convicts
- petitions and counter-petitions
- proclamations
- police appointments
- probate and letters of administration notices
- rents not paid
- schedule of roads applied for to be closed and alienated (and the applicants)
- unclaimed letters

Extract from the Gazette on 13 September 1867
HIS Excellency the Governor with the advice of the Executive Council, directs it to be notified, for general information, that, in accordance with the 22nd section of the Public Schools Act of 1866, the undermentioned Gentlemen have been appointed to form the Public School Boards in connection with the Public Schools established at the places specified, viz. :—
BEGA— J. Tarlington, Esq., J.P., Mr. F. Berne, Mr. J. Heady, Mr. D. Gowing, Mr. W. Seccombe
